Tali was a hands-free time tracking for voice-enabled productivity assistant powered by artificial intelligence. Tali was a team of three Matts who believe that by pairing smart people with above-average technology, they can make everyday speed bumps disappear. They created Tali to make the chore of time tracking invisible, returning our attention to whatever is most important.

There were two product challenges that occured which were their on-boarding flow and an invocation issue impacting the user experience.

To run Tali, it required multiple steps and logins with different applications, therefore, a lot of users that initially signed up for Tali never even got their account setup and never logged an activity through their app.

User experience issue was due to the invocation name of their app Tali which pronounced "tally". However, they kept getting feedback from users that Tali would not respond when they said "tally" and instead would only work when they said "tail-eye".

In 2018, after fixing their onboarding flow and user experience issue it did had a positive impact on their user experience and engagement.

However, nothing really did move the needle where their average daily users crept up but never greater than 10% of their total paid user base and their free trial to paid conversion rate never rose above 3%.

By the end of the year, they knew they were in trouble and tried to ask current investors and new investor to invest at their startup but they all said no.

Therefore, the founders ended up winding down the company.

Only after they launched their product, they realized about the recurring in monthly recurring revenue (MRR).

They never built the functionality for the subscription to automatically renew which meant that everyone who signed up would need to submit their credit card information again.

After reaching out to every person to ask them to submit their credit card information again, they only managed to get some of the users back and ended up with a 78% churn rate.

The founder (Matthew Volm) said fundraising was the least favorite part of his job where he would hear a "no" from 99% of his investors' conversation and "you're too early" were three words he often heard.

Also, during the time of fundraising, the company nearly ran out of money on three separate occasions.
